I don't konw if anyone else could use this, but maybe you could build a mod that would tar.gz any file (manually) in your root/sub directories. I don't have access to be able to tar.gz files on my server but would love to be able to do so if for no other reason then to offer those tar.gz files instead of the large .zip or .rar files for download. I offer some rather large files for download on my site lol.
