Is this possible - a "ding" sound on new messages?

My chatroom is getting incredibly busy and a few users have asked if there is a way to get the chatbox to make an audible sound when new messages popup in the box. It can be a simple midi or wav or whatever, but im not sure if it is possible....

in non-code speak....

if refresh finds new data
then play sound file ding.wav

if refresh finds no new data
then do nothing
